Technically electrical fields don’t go through water but magnetic fields do. We use magnetic fields. Historically people thought it impractical to communicate data and power through sea water, because so much of the electromagnetic energy ends up absorbed or ‘attenuated’ by the sea. At WFS we see it differently. A lot of signal does get attenuated, but if signal, power, distance, data speed and wavelength are all optimally configured, it is still possible to use underwater wireless to deliver high bandwidths and power levels over short distances. This delivers benefits for many applications in the subsea industry.

Our communication systems do not interfere with other equipment either in air or subsea. Some care needs to be taken with the integration of wireless power transfer equipment, this is covered in our user manuals and we can provide design support.

Subsea wireless technology has the distinct advantage that it will operate in adverse water conditions, is unaffected by acoustic noise, operational in shallow water, is immune to multipath and its Doppler effects are minimal.

Depending on your application, what product you choose, and how much data you require, you can achieve a range of up to 50m in seawater with standard Seatooth® underwater wireless products. This can be extended if required by adapting the antenna/power configuration.

In addition to our modems, dataloggers, controllers, and connectors, there still more ways that you can work with WFS. You can purchase anything from standard subsea wireless communications product to a custom engineering solution for your project. You can work with us to investigate a possible subsea wireless solution to your application with a feasibility study, or if you want to add wireless capability to an existing product you could license our Intellectual Property or integrate our OEM systems.
