Wireless Mooring Line Monitoring

Critical data when it is needed, using the wireless R-tTS (Real-time Tension Sensor)
Real-time... in-line... in time
> load
> tension
> inclination
> orientation
Typically, once an alarm is received to indicate a problem with chains on a production vessel, it’s too late. The R-tTS (Real-time Tension Sensor) is a unique wireless anchor and hawser PC based system from Monitor Systems Scotland Ltd, using wireless capability from WFS. The real-time nature of the system provides immediate data on mooring chain tensions for all types of production vessels, including FPSO's and can also be used to effectively to monitor load on renewable energy devices such as floating wind turbines and wave riding devices. The system uses hybrid radio/acoustic technology to monitor multiple chains simultaneously and give early indication if safe load parameters are exceeded.
Critical data is provided on: load, tension, inclination, orientation and can be used to effectively monitor mooring lines, anchors and chains in subsea applications. Any change in condition would be communicated to surface operators, enabling swift action if required. Contact us for more information

Remote Control
WFS' patented through-water radio technology provides a revolutionary and reliable wireless remote control solution that maintains two-way communications between the operator and reciever. The operator has the ability to control the remote system with the touch of a button. The system not only allows positive operator control, but it also can issue a shut down command if the operator and receiver are separated.
An example of this is the revolutionary wireless remote control solution delivered to WaveJet Personal Water Propulsion Systems. Using penetrating radio technology in the form of seatooth® S100, the solution maintains two-way communications between an operator wristband and tranceiver on a motorised surfboard, commanding an engine shutdown if the operator is separated from the board.

Robotic Command & Control
Wireless comms, location and power transfer- Remote deployment in emergency situations
- Streaming video through-ground
terratooth® systems can be integrated with robots to provide wireless communication, location, docking and power transfer functions. Real-time wireless command and control of a robot through the ground enables remote deployment in emergency situations for location of people trapped in caves, tunnels, culverts and collapsed buildings and also support mappings, maintenance and repair of underground sewers, waterways and pipes.
Video can be streamed through the ground using terratooth® to support operations where visual assessments are required, but human life cannot be risked (e.g. Search & Rescue) and the location of an underground vehicle can be established from the surface to pinpoint exact sites in tracking, search and rescue or reconnaissance missions. terratooth® enables homing of a vehicle to a docking station to recharge using wireless power transfer or to transmit information without returning to the surface enabling deployment for longer missions.

Distributed Networked Sensors

- Robust integrated surveillance and communication
- Detect underwater intruders covertly
- Protect high value assets
Underwater networks consist of a variable number of sensors and vehicles that are deployed to perform collaborative monitoring tasks over an extended area. Wide area networks interface to radio-based systems at the surface, such as network-centric warfare systems.
In 2007 WFS won a contract from the UK MoD "Competition of Ideas" to develop the key components of an electromagnetic sensing net for the purpose of Maritime Security and Force protection. Utilizing wireless technology developed by WFS to operate in poor quality waters and harbors with high ambient noise, this system is a robust integrated surveillance and communication solution which enables high value assets to be protected while economizing manpower.
Any intruder (divers, UAV) crossing through the sensing net will be almost instantly detected and its characteristic size, movement and direction would trigger closer investigation. Targeted at stationary vessels deployed outside home waters, as well as in ports, harbors, and offshore anchorages, the WFS sensing net can be erected round an asset to detect underwater intruders covertly, and without alerting the enemy.
Easy to deploy and operate, it offers protection from terrorists and enemy special forces, while the discrete nature of this wireless technology helps avoid the eventuality of a diplomatic upset.

Underwater data exfiltration

- Real-time sensor data
- Wireless transmission from beneath the surface
to a receiver in air - Immune to effects of acoustic conditions
Underwater sensor networks are a key component to the intelligence picture and retrieving real time sensor data in a complex environment can be challenging.
WFS modems will wirelessly beam data directly from beneath the surface to a receiver in air, eliminating the need for a hard-wired system. WFS wireless technology is also immune to any effects of tides, currents, temperature variations, or noisy acoustic conditions that can be caused by vessels or industrial sources.

CASE STUDIES:
AUV Command & Control
- Persistent change detection

- Real time reporting
- Secure navigation, communication, and data transfer
- Wireless docking and power
Unmanned underwater vehicles are a key component to surveying, sanitizing, and monitoring the underwater domain. Effective and persistent change detection and real time reporting are important characteristics of security C4ISR. seatooth® allows a UUV to keep in contact with shore controllers when controlling unmanned vehicles in a busy scenario and avoids UUVs operating in the same strata as manned surface craft.
Tethered vehicles are impractical in this environment and acoustic transmissions suffer from acoustic interference, reverberations, and multipath propagation. A pattern of radio transceivers on the sea bottom allows secure navigation, communication, and data transfer to a semi-autonomous underwater vehicle.
seatooth® takes the command & control application one step further by enabling a power + data docking station which allows a fleet of underwater vehicles to operate continuously; only needing to surface for maintenance. Presence of the vehicles remains covert. Today's WFS products transfer data underwater by patented broadband underwater Wi-Fi signals and power is transferred by inductive transformer coupling. Power to the docking station can be supplied by hard wire or by a wave power generator.

Environment
Environmental Monitoring
WFS's wireless communications technology has the unique capability of delivering real-time data transmission through water and through ground. This capability replaces the need for repeater buoys or cabled links between sensors and data loggers and reduces the cost of maintaining a monitoring system.
Reservoir Monitoring
WFS Radio Modems enable the relay of information from a water level sensor to a monitoring point. Water level information, once transmitted via a WFS modem can then be delivered to a Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) or GSM modem and uploaded to a SCADA system. This system is suited to deployment in service and impounding reservoirs.
Hydrometry & Flood Monitoring
seatooth can be readily implemented with sensors and data loggers delivering regular updates on rainfall and water level rise to decision makers and providing real time flood warning and flood monitoring. Our systems are suitable for long term and rapid deployment, and unlike surface buoys are both unobtrusive and covert, thus minimizing risk of damage to monitoring set-ups.
Water Quality Monitoring:
WFS Radio Modems enable wireless transmission from an underwater sensor to a receiving station above water. The submerged sensor can measure a range of parameters (turbidity, pH, DO (dissolved oxygen), conductivity, temperature, differential & absolute pressure (depth), salinity) all of which can be relayed through the WFS system. Capable of being easily integrated at inlet and outlet points at water treatment works, seatooth is suitable for long term water quality monitoring installations but also capable of being rapidly deployed to investigate and monitor pollution incidents.

CASE STUDIES:
Oceanography
Coastal Survey
WFS technology allows for real-time data collection from the sea-bed to the shore, providing valuable data to quantify, understand and mitigate the effects of coastal erosion.
Shallow-water dredging
In-line with new environmental considerations, WFS wireless technology enables operators to monitor the effect of shallow-water dredging on the underwater environment, and thus maintain sustainable practices by complying with wetland buffers, official dredging depths and placement of dredge spoils.
Monitoring of ports and harbours
Capable of transmitting data from underwater, through the water/air barrier and onto the shore, WFS modems replace impractical communication solutions such as cables and repeater buoys by providing reliable, unobtrusive data transmission.

CASE STUDIES:
Subsea Vehicles
The capability of underwater vehicles for autonomous inspection and maintenance of subsea installations can be extended considerably with the integration of wireless technology from WFS. The addition of wireless communications capability using seatooth® and complementary hybrid solutions can remove traditional limitations of underwater vehicles and enhance safety and reliability of ROV operations in the following applications:
Communications Back Up
seatooth® provides a backup a link for a vehicle attached with an umbilical to a surface vessel using radio-acoustic technology; specifically this is used for communication with a vehicle where the umbilical link has been broken.
Real Time Data Harvest
seatooth® uses the latest in radio frequency (RF) technology to enable data rate transmission over a short range. This makes RF ideal for applications requiring high speed data transfer such as data harvesting from subsea sensors on pipelines, assets, control systems and during construction.
Location & Tracking
seatooth® can be used for location and tracking of subsea vehicles in extreme conditions (including under ice) to enable delivery of high quality data from the underwater environment without the risk of loss of vehicle. A seatooth® system will enable a surface vessel, a helicopter or an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to communicate with and locate an AUV under the water (or ice) at up to 1km range.
Docking & Wireless Power Transfer
seatooth® can aid AUV docking to a vessel or recharging unit, guiding the vehicle and avoiding wet-mating of connectors at depth. AUVs can then be deployed for longer periods by having the capability to recharge their batteries without physical interaction, download data and update software. seatooth®'s power transfer capability also enables deployment of "sealed for life units" on the seabed.

Case studies:
Wireless Integrity Management
Pigging
Using seatooth®, data and images can be transmitted through a pipe wall for location verification as well as providing immediate feedback from sensors within the pipe rather than the traditional creation of a defect map post run. Additionally two
way communications can be enabled for commands to be sent to the pig.
Load Monitoring
An accelerometer can be mounted on a load or mooring and connected to a seatooth® modem. The modem transmits accelerometer data using RF to a monitoring ROV - and the signals are then passed through the ROV's umbilical to the appropriate topside systems or operators. For monitoring near the seawater surface, data can also be transmitted directly through the water-air interface to the vessel.
Strain Monitoring
seatooth+power can facilitate wireless data harvesting from sensors from structures susceptible to VIV or wave motion and damage. This eliminates the need for an umbilical to provide power and communications to sensors and data can be harvested without the need to retrieve any hardware.
Corrosion & Erosion Monitoring
Wireless power and data transfer capability designed into corrosion monitoring systems to facilitate the harvesting of corrosion data, minimizing threat to structural integrity resulting in mechanical failures. Subsea sensors can also be recharged wirelessly using seatooth+power for permanent deployment.
For more information, download our WIRELESS INTEGRITY MANAGEMENT datasheet or contact us at info@wfs-tech.com
CASE STUDIES:
Wireless Controls
Command & Control of Subsea Vehicles and Production Equipment
In the event of a system failure, seatooth® enables ROVs to take control of drilling completion and production equipment without requiring manual intervention. Measurement of variables such as temperature and pressure can wirelessly initiate an emergency disconnect sequence or valve actuation or trigger an alarm allowing immediate action. Subsea video cameras can also be used for visual checks, using seatooth®'s ability to transmit compressed video files.
Early Warning Systems
seatooth® and seatooth+acoustic enable continuous and critical feedback on various factors such as: BOP RAM status or imminent malfunction of equipment. Diagnostic measurements can be monitored more frequently for increased visibility of the health of your equipment.
Wireless Connectors
Permanent and temporary wireless connections, without the need for wet-mate connectors. Connections can be independent or as back up to other power sources, eliminating the problems and downtime associated with making and breaking electrical connections underwater.

+acoustic
seatooth+acoustic was developed to capture the best of both technologies for communication underwater.
The seatooth® range for radio communications, will communicate in shallow water where acoustic technology is limited, and will easily pass through the surface of the water into the air. Acoustics will not penetrate into the air, but will communicate at low bandwidth over a great distance, up to 20kms; whereas seatooth® communicates most effectively at short range. seatooth+acoustic can automatically select between acoustic or radio carriers where appropriate.
The combination of complementary RF and acoustic technologies can extend the capability of both seatooth® and a conventional acoustic modem, offering a robust solution for subsea challenges in deep water.
seatooth+acoustic is available as seatooth® S100 and S300.
+power
